Sunset, Good Company, and a Room That Felt Easy: Our Night at Five Point Five Brewing
Last night we gathered at Five-Point-Five Brewing in El Segundo for our second South Bay mixer, and I left the patio thinking the same thing I thought driving over: this is starting to feel like home.
The room was an even mix of men and women, which made for exactly the kind of night we want to create. Conversations moved easily. Small groups formed, broke apart, formed again. Nobody was standing alone by the bar wondering what to do with their hands.
Our Westlake regulars showed up for us
Our Westlake regulars made the drive out (Carl and Lisa), and I want to say thank you properly. You did not have to come that far. You did it anyway, and your presence is a big part of why a new room fills up and feels warm instead of stiff. We notice, and we appreciate it more than a paragraph in a blog post can say.
I will admit something. I love spending an evening talking with people I already know. There is a comfort in it. What I did not expect was how many lovely new connections I made on top of that, people I had never met before who I now look forward to seeing again. That is the whole thing in a nutshell. You come for one reason and walk out with something extra.

Five Point Five took care of us beautifully. The hospitality was genuine, the space worked perfectly for a group our size, and then the sunset did its part on the patio. Some nights the venue does half the work for you. This was one of them.
Long Beach, we hear you
One of the best conversations of the night was about where we go next. We talked seriously about hosting a mixer in the Long Beach area. We have many singles over 50 down there who have been extremely gracious about driving up to meet us in Los Angeles and the South Bay, and it is time we returned the favor. More on that soon.

Cassie and I love a Sunday afternoon mixer. The vibe is relaxed, there are no expectations, and people come out simply to meet other singles and enjoy the weather. It is the easiest possible way to try one of our events for the first time.

Here is what I want you to know before you decide. We are a very nice bunch of people. Almost everyone walks into that room alone, every single time, including me at our very first event. Our only goal is to make sure nobody feels like an outsider for longer than about ninety seconds.
And yes, I know some of you think our icebreakers are silly. I have heard about it. But they get the conversation going, so they are staying 😉.
